Should We Still Teach Cursive Writing?

A friend of mine posted this on Facebook a few days ago:

In the comments, I was one of the few who didn't agree that the lack of instruction in cursive was a huge problem.  Now that we are 12 years into the 21st Century, it's about time we start focusing on the skills our students will need in this century.  We need to be teaching kids to collaborate, create and innovate, communicate effectively, and think critically.  Not doing so makes school irrelevant to them.  What makes us think that someone would be engaged in a learning process that is irrelevant to them?

Cursive writing does not aid in collaboration in any way.  It doesn't help students become more innovative.  Cursive writers do not think more critically than those who print.  Today's communication is not done in cursive.

We should be teaching students to communicate in the way they will need to in their world.  How much of your communication with your colleagues is done in cursive?  How much is done electronically?

If we continue to teach our students things because "that's what we learned in school," we will continue to produce a generation of graduates without the skills they need to be successful.  It's time to prepare students for their futures and not our past.

  1. Oh yes, the debate over cursive has been raging in my district the last couple of years. I was never taught cursive and still managed to be able to write well so I find it outdated and bothersome for my students in 5th grade. However, some love it so I encourage them to use whichever method of writing that works best for them. Hardly anyone ever chooses cursive since they tell me it slows them down. Perhaps we should ask the students what they feel?

  2. In 7th grade, they've almost made up their mind what they'll choose for writing. I will continue to write in cursive on the board, but I just ask them to write so the reader can easily understand it. I don't know if it should be taught or not. My sister has twin 6-year-olds, and decided she'd teach them at home. All they need is practice, right? Seems like a good thing to practice at home, ? I DO think everyone should be able to READ cursive, though! Thanks for the thought provoked this morning!

  3. Ah cursive... just another thing we expect kids to learn because "that's what we did in school." Besides our signatures on legal documents, some of which are now accepting electronic signatures anyway, what is the purpose? I can't tell you the last time I had to read something in cursive. If kids want to practice their signature or learn how to write in cursive because they want to, great! But I call it just another big waste of time that parents, educators, and community members think is necessary because we all learned it when we were younger.

This is an easy baby step to show that our kids will actually survive if they don't learn the same things we all did when we were younger.

  4. Cursive, just another one of lifes needed skills. I personally think everyone should be taught how to write in cursive because i personally feel it is nicer than ordinary printing. People usually debate about weather they should print or write in cursive but i also believe everyone should be taught to at least READ it, because alot of people genuinely cant

  7. Although it might not be a "practical" for the 21st century, the point of learning cursive is NOT for writings sake...it is for developing fine motor skills which IS important in everyday life.
